Ecology Based Land Management

Our green spaces are often managed out of habit for appearance and uniformity. European pasture grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pretensis) are perfect for a soccer field and surely have there place in our cities, parks, and yards. Though we should consider the maintenance cost, environmental impact, and damage to human health as a result of blanketing our nation in the same few species.

Lets create the spaces where our native insects, birds, and plants are allowed to exist again.

What does Landcare Entail?

  • Depending on site conditions and goals, each project starts with a management plant. If all you need is advice or help deciding what plants should go where, some clients only need evaluations. Evaluations generally include sampling of species.

-What species do we want to control, and how many indivuduals will we tolerate?

-Is the site 20 square feet or 20 acres?

  • Depending on the goals and nature of the site being managed, action can take many forms. Such as; burning, patch mowing, seeding, solarlization, matrix planting, sod removal, woody plant removal, grade changes, and chemical treatments. We are here to help with any parts of the plan that our clients may need.

  • Effective landcare requires that we continue to sample the species so that continual adjustments can be made to the plan dempding on how populations are responding to our treatments. This can be an incredible way to observe the function of our missing ecosystems!
